HOUSTON and HARRIS COUNTY KILL SHELTERS

There are five kill shelters in the City of Houston / Harris County area that kill approximately 80,000* dogs and cats EVERY SINGLE YEAR. (See Mayor's 2005 Task Force Report below details).

*This number does not include animals killed in shelters in surrounding cities or counties such as Humble, Rosenberg, Brazoria County, Ft. Bend County, Montgomery County etc.)

1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston's animal control or city pound

   BARC's Save Rate was 50.48% in 2013

BARC killed or "lost" 12,596 animals in 2013 alone.

2. Harris County Animal Control

Harris County's Save Rate was only 11% in 2012

3. Houston SPCA

The Houston SPCA's Save Rate was only 35% the last time that they were honest and released their records to the public.  We believe that their Save Rate is drastically lower than this now.

4. Houston Humane Society

The Houston Humane Society's Save Rate was only 11% the last time that they were honest and released their records to the public.   They also have "euthanasia only" contracts with surrounding counties, meaning that they take in animals from surrounding communities and kill them for a fee.

5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection

The Save Rate for CAP was only 48% the last time that they were honest and released their records to the public.   They also have "euthanasia only" contracts with surrounding counties, meaning that they take in animals from surrounding communities and kill them for a fee.
